Our Inn

The Past & The Present

Say Hello To Your Hosts

Let us introduce ourselves – We are Sandy & Cathy Best, the owners of the Inn and your official hosts during your stay.

We first fell in love with Nova Scotia while originally looking at property in Cape Breton several years ago. Our home was in Alberta at the time but our hearts belonged to Nova Scotia.

Having many years experience in the hospitality/tourism industry, we decided that moving to Nova Scotia to be Innkeepers, would be the perfect fit for us. During one of our visits, we discovered Pictou and fell in love all over again.

In the summer of 2016, we purchased the now Scotsman Inn and moved to this beautiful historic harbour town with many stone houses, buildings & historical landmarks.

We are proud to share the treasures of our new town with our guests. Why not join us to discover Pictou for yourself. We are here to welcome you!

Common Areas

Our Libraries on both guest floors are filled with a broad selection of books. Take one or leave one.

The dining room is perfect for either quietly reading the morning newspaper or joining in wide-ranging discussions over the complimentary continental breakfast.

The deck and garden are wonderful outside spaces, providing a serene haven. It is populated with trees, plants and blueberry bushes providing both privacy and fresh air – lovely for both socializing and enjoying a glass of wine with friends.

The Past

The original builders and owners of the Inn were James A. Stalker and his wife circa. 1865. They had a general store on the ground floor and ran the bank from there until undertaking the building of the Scotia Bank next door. The family (and servants) lived on the upper levels, and there was even a kiln in the cellar for producing Stalker crockery.

Since those days, the building has had a variety of re-inventions — the town library, insurance office, MLA office, apartments, general store, and now it is the graceful and elegant Scotsman Inn.

The Present

The current owners of the Inn began greeting guests in the summer of 2016. They have added some fine touches to the Inn with the addition of period antiques, artwork, Ship Hector Passenger List, uncovered original fireplaces and more.

As you step into the present at The Scotsman Inn, you’ll find yourself immersed in a world where the past meets the present, creating an unforgettable experience that seamlessly blends history, comfort, and warm hospitality. Be a part of its ongoing legacy.
